Aimee Mcleod. Laminate Flooring. July 14th , 2018.
Laminate floors are very similar to hardwood, but much less expensive. They are covered in hard plastic which makes them durable and hard. These are used as flooring by many people who want to have hardwood floor but who cannot afford to install and maintain these floors. Laminated flooring is easy to install and easy to maintain as well.
With all the stories about damage to laminate floors, one has to be careful in using the proper rug pad for the type of floor involved. I keep hearing that flooring people advise the homeowner not to use any rubber or PVC rug pad on their laminate floor as this can cause a negative reaction with the floor. Although this may not be the case in all instances, one is better to be safe than sorry.
Most often laminates are made of melamine resin which is a compound made with formaldehyde. This has brought on a increasing concern about indoor air quality from releases of volatile organic compounds from building materials with formaldehyde. However, the resin materials are believe to have a significantly lower emissions than the particle board and other materials where the formaldehyde has been used. There are some laminate flooring (parador proair) that will use a chemical process to reduce and neutralize formaldehyde emissions throughout the life of the floor.
Laminate flooring is constructed with the use of a high density fiberboard core. This fiberboard core is to be sandwiched between a melamine backing, a melamine laminate top and a high quality photographic paper with an image of a wood. Since laminate flooring uses a thin layer of hardwood, this reduces the amount of expensive hardwood to be used, thus saving money. Laminate floors can replicate the characteristics of a hand scraped hardwood floor, giving any floor a very realistic design. Laminate floors are made to look natural by combining natural looking designs with a tough and durable finish. This type of flooring is made to look like natural stone flooring or wood flooring, although it is actually made of synthetic materials.
Glued Laminates Initially, all laminate floors required the use of glue to stabilize the tongue and groove connection. Eventually some laminates arrived pre-glued, needing the application of a bit of moisture to hold the joints together. Glue laminates are quickly becoming a thing of the past as they require more work on the part of the installer, and more and more homeowners are doing their own installations.
